北海道で出会った白いエゾモモンガ
2026年あけましておめでとうございます。
1月2日。今朝はマイナス10度の晴れた朝でした。日の出前のエゾモモンガに会いに行くと、でっかい満月が西の空の地平線にあり、月とモモンガの写真が撮れないかなぁと巣穴に向かいました。暗い中で２、３匹のモモンガが、木々の中でチョロチョロと動いているのが見えました。いつもの枝に乗ってハンノキの蕾を口にくわえて静かに食べている様子が見えました。月はどこへ？と思ったら雲の中に隠れてしまい。思惑はそんなものです。日の出も１５分くらい前までに、6匹かな？巣穴に戻って行きました。今年も朝晩のエゾモモンガを見に行く毎日です。
昨年は、4月にオーストラリアに釣りに行って、ブリスベンに住む仲間とボートを引っ張って釣りに行きました。ダム湖でサラトガというアロワナを釣ったり、海でトレバリーやカツオを釣りました。9月は四国の高知県で尺鮎とアカメを狙いました。鮎は２８cmまででしたが、本場のアユ釣りの迫力醍醐味に魅了されました。釣った鮎を餌にして、８０cmを超すアカメを釣りました。
小学3年の息子(洲志）が、「海で船で釣りをしたい」というので、九州宮崎県の友人にお願いして、息子と2人で3日間の九州の旅をしてきました。私にとっても初めての九州で、全てが新鮮。息子も早起きも船の揺れにもめげずに、1日目はイサキやメジナを大きなクーラーボックスいっぱいに釣りました。2日目は、アジを釣って、それを餌に大きなブリを釣りました。息子も初めての海の力強い魚との勝負。見事な一本でした。それが年越しのお刺身とお寿司となって、親戚みんなで喜びを共有でしたことは、息子にとっては貴重な経験になったことでしょう。
今年は、1月にオーストラリアに1人で釣りに行きます。北海道が進めている観光促進で、北海道アドベンチャートラベルの研修という形で、北海道からの予算で釣りに行けてしまうという、「真面目な仕事」という形の釣り旅になりそうです。オーストラリアの西部のエクスマウス。どんな自然、どんな釣り、どんな人に出会うのか、久しぶりの1人旅です。
9月には、また四国の鮎とアカメのリベンジ。そして、息子は今度は夜釣りがしたいという。
月日が経つのが早いもので、今日1日、毎日を丁寧に生きないと、あっという間に年をとってしまいます。という思いで、できることをやるだけです。
そして、これは営業？です。
昨日1月2日。本を出版しました。
白いエゾモモンガの観察を記録した写真集です。ガイド仲間やイラストレーターの友人たちと力を合わせて出版することができました。
2024年11月に、家の近くで偶然見つけた白いモモンガ。普通にエゾモモンガと違って体の毛が真っ白で、20年以上エゾモモンガを見てきましたが、白いエゾモモンガに出会ったのは初めてでした。それが、私の家から10分ほどの場所に偶然見つけたので、それが昨年の冬のテーマ、毎朝毎晩、通いました。幸運なお客さんは白いエゾモモンガを見ることができました。
毎日巣穴に通って、2024年の11月から2025年の3月まで白いエゾモモンガを観察することができました。そして、2025年10月に巣穴を見に行くと、、、。この白いエゾモモンガがその後、どうなったのか、結末は、本の中で、、、

Happy New Year 2026.
This morning was a clear winter morning with temperatures down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Before sunrise, I went out to meet the Ezo flying squirrels. A huge full moon was sitting low on the western horizon, and I wondered if I might be able to photograph the moon together with the squirrels, so I headed toward their burrow.
In the darkness, I could see two or three squirrels darting around among the trees. As usual, they perched on their favorite branches, quietly holding alder buds in their mouths and eating. Then I thought, Where did the moon go?—it had slipped behind the clouds. Things rarely go exactly as planned. By about fifteen minutes before sunrise, maybe six squirrels had returned to the burrow. This year again, my days will be filled with morning and evening visits to see the Ezo flying squirrels.
Last year, in April, I traveled to Australia for fishing. Together with friends living in Brisbane, we towed a boat and went fishing. In dam lakes, we caught saratoga, a type of arowana, and in the ocean we caught trevally and bonito.
In September, I went to Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku, aiming for large ayu (sweetfish) and akame. The ayu reached up to 28 cm, and I was deeply captivated by the power and excitement of authentic ayu fishing. Using the ayu we caught as bait, I managed to catch an akame over 80 cm long.
My third-grade son, said he wanted to go fishing from a boat at sea. So I asked a friend in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, and the two of us took a three-day trip together. It was my first time visiting Kyushu, and everything felt fresh and new.
Despite early mornings and the rocking of the boat, my son never complained. On the first day, he caught isaki and black sea bream, filling a large cooler box. On the second day, he caught horse mackerel, used them as bait, and landed a big yellowtail. It was his first serious battle with a powerful ocean fish, and it was a magnificent catch. That fish became sashimi and sushi for our New Year’s celebration, shared with our relatives. It was surely a precious experience for him.
This year, starting January 22, I will travel alone to Australia for fishing. Through a tourism promotion initiative led by Hokkaido—an Adventure Travel training program—I will be able to make this fishing trip using public funding, officially as a form of “serious work.”
The destination is Exmouth, in Western Australia. What kind of nature, fishing, and people will I encounter? It will be my first solo trip in a long time.
In September, I plan to return to Shikoku to challenge ayu and akame once again. And now my son says he wants to try night fishing next.
Time passes quickly. If I don’t live each day with care, I feel like I’ll grow old in no time. With that in mind, I simply do what I can, one day at a time.
And now—this might sound like an advertisement.
Yesterday—January 2—I published a book.
It is a photo book documenting my observations of a white Ezo flying squirrel. With the help of fellow guides and illustrator friends, we were able to bring it into the world.
In November 2024, I happened to find a white flying squirrel near my home. Unlike ordinary Ezo flying squirrels, its fur was completely white. I have been observing Ezo flying squirrels for over 20 years, but this was the first time I had ever encountered a white one. By chance, it was located only about ten minutes from my house, and it became the theme of my winter. I visited the site every morning and evening. Some lucky guests were also able to see the white flying squirrel.
I continued visiting the burrow daily and was able to observe it from November 2024 through March 2025. Then, when I returned to the burrow in October 2025…
What happened to this white flying squirrel afterward—the conclusion is revealed in the book.
