2025年12月5日 昨日は満月だったのだろうか？モモンガの毎日の朝と夕暮れ、立派な月が浮かんでいた。めずらしく小学生の子供たちを連れてモモンガを見に行ったので、フィールドスコープで月を見せてあげた。普段は遠くに見えるお月様。のぞいてみると手が届きそうにも見えた。遠くの月だけど、案外近い。いつも見てるものを、違った角度で見ると世界が変わる。私は死ぬまでに月に行ってみたい。という夢を叶えてくれるガイドはいないのだろうか、、、笑
December 5, 2025 — I wonder if last night was a full moon. Every morning and evening lately, a magnificent moon has been hanging in the sky during the squirrels’ activity. Yesterday, I unusually brought my elementary-school kids along to watch the flying squirrels, so I let them look at the moon through the field scope. The moon that usually looks so far away suddenly felt close enough to touch when viewed through the lens. It’s far away, yet surprisingly close. When you look at something familiar from a different angle, the world changes. I want to go to the moon at least once before I die. Is there no guide who can make that dream come true…?
11月もあっという間に終わってしまって、もう12月。はぁ、、、。 やるだけのことはやったのだろうか？それとも、もっとやれたのか。そんなことを考えながら歳を重ねる日々。フライフィッシングのガイドもドライフライの季節を終えて、冬を待つ、雪を待つ、何もないような季節の中で、何かできないか？やらなきゃいけないことを、毎日こなして、11月が終わった。
November flew by, and it’s already December. Sigh…Did I do everything I could? Or could I have done more?I spend my days growing older while thinking about things like that.The fly-fishing guiding season for insects has ended, and now it’s the in-between season—waiting for winter, waiting for snow, a season that feels like nothing is happening.
Even in this quiet time, I wonder if there’s something I can do.I worked through the tasks I had to do each day, and before I knew it, November was over.
11月は釣りのガイドの仕事と冬の野生動物へのカメラの仕事が交差し始める。まだ紅葉が残る森を探して紅葉とモモンガの写真を撮って。モモンガたちに挨拶する。久しぶりに人間をみたような視線でこちらを警戒する様子が、シーズン初期の楽しみでもある。落ち葉の音が新鮮で、少しずつ冬が近づいてくる森がとても気持ちいい。
In November, my fly-fishing guiding work begins to overlap with my winter wildlife photography work. I search for forests where the autumn leaves still remain and photograph flying squirrels among the colors. I greet the squirrels, and the way they watch me cautiously—as if seeing a human for the first time in a while—is one of the joys of the early season. The sound of fallen leaves feels fresh, and the forest, gradually slipping toward winter, is incredibly pleasant.
11月のエゾモモンガは、秋の活動パターンと冬の活動パターンが交差するような季節。なので、変化や移動が多く、巣穴の周りに糞や食跡の痕跡も残りにくい。なので、毎日モモンガのフィールドに通っても毎日違う。変化に気づかないと、なかなかうまくいかないのが11月。いい場所があったと思っても悪くなったり、イマイチだった場所がよくなるということが11月には繰り返させる。ある意味11月は難しい。それでも、1匹づつ、丁寧にモモンガに挨拶するように写真を撮ると秋らしい顔を見せてくれる。
In November, the Ezo flying squirrels are in a season where their autumn activity patterns begin to overlap with their winter patterns. Because of this, there is a lot of movement and change, and they leave fewer signs—such as droppings or feeding marks—around their burrows. Even if you visit the squirrel field every day, each day is different. If you don’t notice the changes, things won’t go well in November. A spot that seemed good can suddenly become bad, and a spot that wasn’t promising can turn into a good one—this kind of cycle repeats throughout November. In a way, November is a difficult month. Even so, if you greet each squirrel carefully and photograph them one by one, they show you expressions that feel very much like autumn.
11月の良いところは、エゾモモンガプラスが面白かった。朝と夕暮れはエゾモモンガの観察と撮影は基本として、昼の時間を何をみに行くか、どんな自然に出逢いに行くか、お客さんの興味や時間を相談して、海岸線の自然や山の上の針葉樹林隊など、野生動物に会いに行くことができた。冬になると、冬の自然がやってくるけど、11月はまだ雪に覆われるまえのあちこちへ、いろんな動物に出会うことができた。
One of the good things about November is that the “Ezo Flying Squirrel Plus” style guiding was really enjoyable.
In the mornings and evenings, observing and photographing the flying squirrels was the foundation, but during the daytime, we would discuss the guest’s interests and available time, and decide what to go see and what kind of nature to encounter. We were able to visit coastal nature areas, coniferous forests in the mountains, and places where we could look for wildlife.
Once winter arrives, winter nature takes over, but in November—before everything is covered in snow—we could travel to many different places and encounter a variety of animals.
十勝の海岸線の自然は、北海道ならではの高山植物の群落が残っている。標高0メートルに高山帯の植生がみられるのも太平洋の海水温が低いからで、夏には霧に覆われることが多い海岸線は冷涼な気候と砂丘という貧栄養の砂地土壌が、貴重な植物の群落になっている。秋の夕陽が枯れていく植物を照らし、ハマナスの赤い実が印象的だった。鮭釣りで賑わっていた砂浜は、釣り人からおこぼれをもらっていたようで人になれたキタキツネがいた。車からおりると近づいてくるし、足元の小枝を投げると餌がもらえると思って近距離まで近づいてくる。こんな人馴れしているキツネも珍しいので写真を撮らせてもらった。
Along the Tokachi coastline, you can still find clusters of alpine plants unique to Hokkaido. The reason alpine vegetation appears at an elevation of zero meters is that the Pacific Ocean’s water temperature there is low. In summer, the coastline is often covered in fog, and its cool climate combined with nutrient-poor sandy dune soil creates habitats for rare plant communities.
In autumn, the setting sun illuminated the withering plants, and the bright red berries of the rugosa rose were striking.
On the sandy beach, which had been lively during the salmon-fishing season, there was a red fox that had grown accustomed to people—likely because it had been receiving scraps from anglers. When we stepped out of the car, it approached us, and when we tossed a small twig at our feet, it came even closer, expecting food. A fox this tame is unusual, so we took the opportunity to photograph it.
11月の楽しみにとして、ナキウサギにも会いに行ける。針葉樹林の中を抜けて、岩場を目指し、ナキウサギを待っている時間というのはとても豊だと思う。爽やかなトドマツの香りや時々クマゲラの鳴く声。自然の音しかしない世界で待っているのがとても気持ちがいい。ときどき「ピシッ」とナキウサギの声がここえると、石の上にポツンとたたずんでいる。ナキウサギも特殊な環境に特化して生きてきた、貴重で可愛らしい動物。ナキウサギのフィールドではエゾライチョウにもよく遭遇する。声を聞いて姿をみつけることが多い。
One of the pleasures of November is that you can also go to see the pika. Passing through the coniferous forest and heading toward the rocky area, the time spent waiting for a pika to appear feels incredibly rich. The refreshing scent of Sakhalin fir, the occasional call of the black woodpecker—waiting in a world filled only with the sounds of nature is deeply pleasant.Sometimes you hear a sharp “pik!” call, and there it is, standing alone on a rock.The pika is a precious and charming animal, adapted to a very specialized environment.
11月11日、ゾロが良い日に、絵本作家の村上康成さんが遊びにきてくれた。今回のテーマは、あのときの作品を完成させること、だった。 昨年、十勝川ででっかいブラウントラウトを15分間くらいの格闘の末に足元のところで逃してしまった。その時の印象が「アブラビレ」だったとのことで、そのアブラビレをなんとしてでも完成させたい。という何からくる闘志なのか、、、笑 1日はロッジに缶詰で作品と睨めっこ。1日は、息抜きに音更川ですこしフライフィッシング。雪がちらつく天気だったけど、まだまだドライフライで楽しめる、音更川に癒されました。
On November 11th—a date with repeating numbers that feels lucky—picture-book author Yasunari Murakami came to visit.The theme of this visit was: “to finish that piece from back then.”
Last year, on the Tokachi River, after about fifteen minutes of battling a huge brown trout, it escaped right at our feet. What left the strongest impression on him was the adipose fin, and he was determined to complete a piece featuring that fin no matter what. I’m not sure where that fighting spirit comes from…
He spent one full day holed up in the lodge, locked in a staring contest with his artwork.
On the next day, we took a break and did a bit of fly-fishing on the Otofuke River. Snow was falling lightly, but the river still allowed us to enjoy dry-fly fishing. The Otofuke River was soothing as always.
今年のイトウ釣りのチャレンジャーは、２組。5、6年前に来たときはまだルアーアングラーだったかご夫婦。いつの間にか、ダブルハンドを振ってイトウを狙う。2日間のガイドで、天気も穏やかな日に恵まれた。「アメマスが5匹釣れたら、イトウが1匹釣れる感じです」と説明していたら、旦那がアメマスを3匹釣ったらイトウを釣った。そして奥様はアメマスを4匹釣ったらイトウと釣った。なかなかおみごと。何もない、シーンとしたモノトーンの世界で沈めて引っ張るブラインドのイトウ釣りだけど、イトウという魚の魅了というのは、不思議なもの。寒いのに、釣れないのに、でも11月の最後の最後にイトウに出会いたい。体の芯から震えるようなアドレナリンはこの時期のこの魚が絶好調な気がする。１週間前に仕留めたエゾシカの肉でシャーシュー麺を作った。これで体があったまった。３人とも、イトウが釣れてよかったよかった。そして、ガイド終わったら風邪ひいた。
This year, we had two challenger groups for the taimen (Itou) fishing. The couple who came 5 or 6 years ago—back then they were still lure anglers—are now casting double-hand rods to target Itou. During their two days of guided fishing, the weather was calm and kind. I explained to them, “Roughly speaking, if you catch five Dolly Varden, you can expect one Itou.” Sure enough, when the husband caught three Dollies, he hooked an Itou. And when the wife caught four Dollies, she caught an Itou as well. Pretty impressive.
Blind-fishing for Itou—sinking the line and stripping it back—in a silent, monochrome world where nothing seems to happen… yet the charm of this fish is something mysterious. It’s cold, the fishing is tough, and still, at the very end of November, you want to encounter an Itou. The kind of adrenaline that makes your whole body tremble feels like it reaches its peak with this fish at this time of year.
A week ago, I harvested an Ezo deer and made chashu-style ramen with the meat. That warmed me right up.
11月の自然もあっという間に、通り過ぎた。少しのタイミングだったけど、いろんな景色に出会うことができた。ガイドは12月から本格的に冬のシーズンを迎え、エゾモモンガたちも冬の暮らしが始まる。今年は、ハンノキの尾花が豊作という楽しみな季節。モモンガたちと仲間たち。どんな自然に出会うことができるか、リサーチを怠らず、お客さんの背中をみながら全力でサポートさせていただきます。この冬に遊びに来てくれるゲストの方々の幸運に期待して、どんな冬に出会えるか楽しみにお待ちしております。

November’s nature passed by in the blink of an eye. It was only a brief window, but I was able to witness many different landscapes. From December, guiding fully enters the winter season, and the Ezo flying squirrels begin their winter way of life as well. This year brings the exciting prospect of an abundant crop of alder catkins. The flying squirrels and their forest companions—what kind of nature will we encounter together?
I’ll keep up my research and support each guest with everything I have, always watching their pace and needs. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of winter awaits us, and wishing the best of luck to all the guests who will visit this season.
There are still a few openings left in my guiding schedule, and you can check availability on the Google Calendar posted on this website. For fishing trips, June, July, and May tend to fill up quickly, but August and September are exciting months as well. There are also plenty of openings for Ezo flying squirrel observation in November 2027, so I highly recommend experiencing November’s nature. How about starting to think about your next trip now?
