9月下旬から、秋の虫が騒ぎ始め、その中でも、アワフキムシは私のパートナー
抜群にいい写真を撮ってくれたのが、然別湖グレートフィッシングの田畑さん。
然別湖のセカンドステージといえば、アワフキムシと大型ニジマスのライズ。
その難しさと面白さが、詰まった9月10月の釣り。それにプラス、山岳渓流はテントウムシやカメムシが越冬のために大移動するので、虫たちも必死、鱒たちも必死、そして釣り人も必死になる。

Maybe I burned out completely after going all-in for the Akame and Shaku Ayu in Shikoku, because I just haven’t had the energy since then. Getting old, I guess…
By late September, the autumn insects began to stir. Among them, the spittlebug became my perfect partner.
The one who captured an outstanding photo of it was Mr. Tabata from Shikaribetsu Lake Great Fishing.
Speaking of the second stage of Shikaribetsu Lake, it’s all about the spittlebugs and the rises of big rainbow trout.
That combination of difficulty and excitement made for unforgettable fishing in September and October.
And in the mountain streams, ladybugs and stink bugs start their great migration to prepare for overwintering.
The insects are desperate, the trout are desperate, and the anglers are desperate too.
風の強い然別湖で、ひたすら漕いだ20日間。ライズに翻弄、虫に翻弄、そしてクルージングライズを仕留めるのは、なかなかのゲーム性と面白さです。
Twenty days of constant paddling on the windy Lake Shikaribetsu.
Challenged by the rises, teased by the insects — and finally managing to take down a cruising rise — it’s a game of skill and pure excitement.
秋の然別湖のライズも、山岳渓流でのライズの釣りも、基本タックルは、
１、シングルハンド3番、もしくは4番
２、リールはドラグ性能が良いもの
３、フライラインは、ダブルテーパー（ウエイトフォワードよりもDT)
４、リーダー４エックス１２フィート、扱えるなら１５フィート。
５、ティペットはフロロカーボンの４、５、６、たまに７エックス。
６、フライは、8番、10番のカメムシ、16番のてんとう虫、18番のアワフキムシ。（迷ったらガイドフライを使うべし！）
そして、なによりも、観察。
１に観察、２に観察、、、、
魚のサイズ、ライズ頻度、定位か、クルージングか、
魚を見て、ライズを見て、虫をみて、
どう釣るか、ストーキング、立ち位置、キャストのタイミング、
全ては観察から、、、、
The key tackle setup for autumn fishing — whether for the rises at Lake Shikaribetsu or the mountain streams — is as follows:

然別湖のライズは、水温と風次第で、岸際だったり、沖だったり、
沖のライズはブルーバックのニジマスもいるので、この変化も魅力。
At Lake Shikaribetsu, the location of the rises depends entirely on water temperature and wind conditions — sometimes close to shore, other times far out in open water.
Out on the lake, you may even encounter blue-backed rainbow trout, adding another layer of excitement and beauty to these ever-changing conditions.
然別湖は基本ボートからの釣りなので、間に休憩的に、然別湖、そしてまた川歩きなど、天気や気温、風で行き先は考える毎日。川は川で難しく面白い。魚のサイズもいろいろ。
Fishing at Lake Shikaribetsu is basically done from a boat, so between sessions, there’s time for a break — sometimes on the lake, sometimes wading the river. Each day’s plan depends on the weather, temperature, and wind.
The river presents its own challenges and excitement, with a variety of fish sizes to target, keeping every day fresh and engaging.
はるばるマリオウジニッキさんに会いに行ったという、彼のロッドは名前入りのグラスロッド。こりゃ、しっかり結果を出してお礼しなければ、、、 ５年くらい前はルアーアングラーだった彼はの伸び代はさすが若さ。

岸際のカメムシへの派手なライズが、よく太ったニジマスだった。親子でフライフィッシングを楽しむというのも、とても羨ましい。、息子が釣れば、しっかりお父さんも釣る。とてもいい光景に同席できる幸せ。
The flashy rises along the shore, triggered by stink bugs, were often well-fed rainbow trout. Watching a family enjoy fly fishing together is truly heartwarming — when the son catches a fish, the father makes sure to catch one too. It’s a wonderful scene, and I felt lucky to witness it firsthand.
ミズナラの葉っぱの色が変わり始めると、マイタケの木をチェックしに行く。一昨日出ていた太いミズナラに、ちょうど食べ頃取りごろのマイタケが出ていた。このタイミングでロッジに止まっていたゲストさんはマイタケづくしでラッキーだった。
When the leaves of the Mizunara oak start to change color, I go check the trees for maitake mushrooms. Just the day before yesterday, on a thick Mizunara, I found maitake at the perfect stage for picking and eating. Guests staying at the lodge at that timing were lucky enough to enjoy a full spread of fresh maitake.
然別湖は、セカンドシーズンは後半になるほど、アワフキムシが増えてきて、魚たちの偏食と警戒心も増し、釣りはさらに難しく面白くなる。できれば、セカンドシーズンの後にサードシーズンがあれば、、、と思うくらい11月になってもアワフキムシは飛びライズする。
At Lake Shikaribetsu, during the second season, spittlebugs (awafukimushi) become more abundant as the season progresses. As a result, the fish grow more selective and wary, making the fishing even more challenging—and even more exciting.
By November, the spittlebugs are still flying and triggering rises, to the point that you almost wish there were a third season after the second.
70歳を超える奥様。素晴らしいフィライフィッシャーで、なによりライズを取ることが好きで、ブラインドよりもライズ。そしてニジマスの強さが好き。この日も、気温が低く、ライズが少ない中で、昼過ぎに見つけた口先を出すコカゲロウにライズする魚をまず観察。いいライズだった。そしてフライを吸い込む瞬間は、今でも鮮明に思い出す美しいヘッドアンドテールだった。こんな光景を見れると、やっぱりドライフライの釣りをやる。リュウノさんの竹竿がまた素晴らしく、長いリーダーティペットを飛ばす。
A lady over 70, an amazing fly fisher, and above all, someone who loves taking rises—always choosing rises over blind fishing. She enjoys the strength of rainbow trout as well.
On this day, with low temperatures and few rises, she first observed a fish rising to a mayfly just skimming the surfacearound early afternoon. It was a beautiful, textbook rise. I can still vividly recall the moment the fish sucked in the fly, a perfect head-and-tail presentation. Moments like this are exactly why we fish with dry flies.
Ryuuno’s bamboo rod was superb, sending long leaders and tippets across the water with grace.
秋の流れ、風が吹き、落ち葉が流れる。鱒も落ち葉と虫をよく見分けてライズ。私は対岸からライズ、ライズ、と声をかけながら、1日が暮れる。
s氏が３年生。少しはフライも飛ばせるようになったので、これなら釣れると、ガイドの隙をみて、一緒に釣りに行った。いきなりでっかいニジマスが掛かって、大変。「これ終わるの？」と聞いてくるs氏、よく頑張った。
S, now in third grade, has gotten to the point where he can cast a fly a little, so I figured he was ready to catch a fish. Taking advantage of a moment while the guide wasn’t looking, we went fishing together.
Right away, he hooked a huge rainbow trout, and it was quite the struggle. “Is this going to be over?” he asked—but he hung in there remarkably well.
円安のためか、外国人のゲストも増えた。彼らは新婚旅行でアラスカから、イトウやアメマスがメインだと言うけど、ニジマスを釣ってとても楽しんでいた。アラスカではドライフライで大きなニジマスは釣れないのだとか、、、
Perhaps due to the weak yen, the number of foreign guests has increased. This particular couple was on their honeymoon from Alaska, mainly aiming for ito and amemasu, but they thoroughly enjoyed catching rainbow trout. Apparently, in Alaska, it’s not possible to catch big rainbow trout on a dry fly, which made the experience even more exciting for them.
紅葉も深まり、カメムシも増える。テントウムシかカメムシか。今年の川はアワフキムシが不在なため、難しいライズというより、散発な時合を釣らなければ、という難しいライズだったか？
As the autumn colors deepen, the number of stink bugs increases. Is it a ladybug or a stink bug?
This year, with spittlebugs absent in the river, the challenge wasn’t just tricky rises—it was more about targeting the sporadic windows of activity. You had to strike during those brief, unpredictable moments to get a fish to rise.
この方、知る人ぞしる九州のUさん。私が知るなかで抜群の釣りキチで状況判断の速さ。１０人のなかの天才の1人だと、、、（できるだけ褒めておく）
2日間のガイドで、狙うは1匹だけ。
3年間温めていた、巨大魚に案内。こいつは、、、と見た瞬間に笑うしか無かった。
This is Mr. U from Kyushu, known to those in the know. Among the anglers I know, he’s exceptionally obsessed with fishing and has lightning-fast situational judgment. Honestly, he’s one of the ten geniuses in my circle… (I’ll praise him as much as I can!)
Over a two-day guided trip, his target was just one fish. I guided him to the giant fish he had been waiting three years to pursue. The moment he laid eyes on it… all he could do was laugh in disbelief.
ヌシの食いが立つまで、ひたすらこの景色を見ていた。
I just kept watching this scenery, waiting patiently for the big fish to start feeding.
1匹を狙って釣る。となると、だいたいあまり面白くない釣りになる。でもチャンスとばかりに、目の前にフライを運ぶのは、これが理にかなっている？こんな泥臭い釣りを長くやっている釣りキチほど、川にいて面白い。ヌシクラスの釣り人でも、さすがにスイッチが入り切らない魚を食わせるのは不可能だった。ただ、カエルを目の前でひと飲みにした光景を見た。
When you’re targeting just one fish, the fishing can often become less exciting. Yet, seizing the opportunity to present the fly right in front of the fish—that actually makes sense, doesn’t it? The anglers who have been doing this gritty, hands-on style of fishing for a long time are the ones who make being on the river truly interesting.
Even for a top-tier angler, it was impossible to provoke a fish that just wouldn’t switch on. Still, we got to witness a remarkable moment: a fish swallowing a frog whole right before our eyes.
６９歳でフライフィッシングを初めて、74歳。
こんな釣り人を見れるのも、なかなか。
キャスティイングは毎年上達し、それに比例してしっかり釣るようになる。
70歳からでも始める。上達する。釣りたい魚が、行きたい場所がある。そんな70歳に私もなれるだろうか、、、
She started fly fishing at 69 and is now 74.
It’s rare to see an angler like her.
Her casting improves every year, and in proportion, she catches more consistently.
Even starting at 70, you can improve, you can catch the fish you want, and you can go where you want to go.
I can’t help but wonder… will I be able to become that kind of 70-year-old myself?
やっぱりこの人、tさんは、釣るんですよ。この日は、めっちゃ寒く、魚も浮かず虫も流れず、竿をセットすることなく、帰ろうと思っていたけど、もう一つプールに行ってみようと、いうので、仕方なく、、、
観察していると、浮いてないけど、食い気がありそうな魚だったので、これ沈めたら食うかも、提案すると、さすが釣りの幅が広い人は釣れるイメージができると釣る。雪の降るなかでのランディングだった。こんな貴重な1匹も記憶にのこる素晴らしい釣りだった。
As expected, T-san catches fish. That day was freezing cold, the fish weren’t rising, the insects weren’t drifting, and I was ready to head home without even setting up a rod. But T-san insisted on trying one more pool, so I reluctantly agreed…
Watching carefully, we spotted fish that weren’t rising but seemed interested in feeding. I suggested that if we sank the fly, they might take it. As expected of someone with such a broad fishing experience, T-san could visualize the strikeand made it happen.
The fish was landed amid falling snow, and that single, precious catch made for an unforgettable day of fishing.
シーズン最後のゲストも長年のリピーターの方で、いろいろ教わった。ライズを見つけてあげれば、見てるだけで十分で、あとは1人で考えてしっかり釣るから素晴らしい。1日だけ天気が許してくれて、ライズに恵まれ、2匹の色違い、個性も違う鱒が釣れた。その代わり、残りの２日は、何もできない寒さと風。それが大人の季節。大人のライズ。だから面白い。
The last guests of the season were long-time repeat visitors, and I learned a lot from them. Once you point out a rise, just watching is enough—they think for themselves and catch the fish on their own. It’s truly impressive.
One day, the weather cooperated, and we were rewarded with rises, landing two trout of different colors and distinct personalities. The other two days, however, were too cold and windy to do anything.
That’s the adult season. The adult rise. And that’s exactly what makes it so fascinating.
オオハクチョウの声を聞くと、いよいよ冬。ロッジの庭の椎茸のほだ木にクマゲラが来た。さすがに破壊力は脅威。害鳥になってしまう。モモンガは秋の紅葉が入るように、巣穴を探して、チェックと確認作業。まだおっかなびっくりなモモンガたちが、また可愛い。これから季節が進むとモモンガたちの活動が変わってくる。
Hearing the calls of the whooper swans signals that winter is truly approaching. A black woodpecker visited the shiitake logs in the lodge garden—its destructive power is truly impressive, almost a pest.
As for the flying squirrels, they are now searching their burrows, doing their autumn checks, making sure their nests are ready with the fall foliage. The squirrels, still a little cautious and tentative, are irresistibly cute. As the season progresses, their behavior and activity patterns will start to change.
