ロッジラッキーフィールドの周辺では、エゾモモンガ、シマエナガ、エゾフクロウ、キタキツネなど身近な野生が観察、撮影することができます。ですが、この冬の私のテーマはヤマセミでした。
Around the Lodge Lucky Field, you can observe and photograph familiar wild animals such as the Siberian flying squirrel, the Japanese long-tailed tit, the Siberian owl, and the Ezo red fox. This year, my theme was the kingfisher.
ヤマセミは、本州では一般的な鳥で山間の渓流なので、観察できる鳥ですが、警戒心が強いのが普通で、撮影もなかなか難しく人気の野鳥です。このヤマセミも北海道にも生息していて、冬場な山奥の渓流エリアから、平野部の湧水周辺で観察することができます。ヒントは、サクラマスが遡上する河川や鮭の稚魚が降海するような河川がヤマセミにとって都合が良い様です。
The kingfisher is a common bird in Honshu and can be seen in mountain streams, but it is usually very cautious and quite difficult to photograph, making it a popular wild bird. This kingfisher also lives in Hokkaido, where it can be observed in winter in mountain stream areas and around springs in the plains. A hint is that rivers where cherry salmon swim upstream and rivers where salmon fry go down to the sea are convenient for the kingfisher.
本州のヤマセミと同じように北海道のヤマセミの警戒心もなかなか最高レベルです。夏場は釣りのガイドで渓流を毎日歩きますが、ヤマセミにも毎日のように遭遇します。茂みに隠れて魚の様子を観察しているにもかかわらず、遠くの方からヤマセミの声が聞こえてきたと思うと、はるか１００m離れた場所でも急旋回して、逃げていってしまいほど、ヤマセミはなぜあんなに警戒心が強いのでしょうか？
Just like the Crested Kingfishers of Honshu, the Crested Kingfishers of Hokkaido are extremely cautious. In the summer, I walk along mountain streams every day as a fishing guide, and I encounter Crested Kingfishers almost every day. Even though I'm hiding in the bushes and observing the fish, when I hear a Crested Kingfisher's voice from afar, even if it's only 100 meters away, I make a sudden turn and run away. Why are Crested Kingfishers so cautious?
そんな警戒心が強いヤマセミですが、この冬の私のテーマでした。
Although the kingfisher is quite wary, it was my theme this winter.
11月から、ヤマセミの存在は気になっていて、シマエナガやコアカゲラを探している時に発見し、その遭遇頻度や、遭遇場所から、ヤマセミが何を考え、何をしたいか、どうしたら近くに寄らせてもらえるか、そんなテーマが頭に思い浮かび始めました。自然界に隠された小さなヒント、そして、知恵比べ。フィールドの近くに暮らしているので、毎日がトライアンドエラー。観察と一歩づつの前進あるのみでした。
I had been curious about the presence of the Crested Kingfisher since November, and discovered it while searching for the Japanese Long-tailed Tits and the Little Red Woodpecker. From how often I encountered them and where I encountered them, I began to think about what they were thinking, what they wanted to do, and how I could get close to them. Small hints hidden in the natural world, and a battle of wits. Living close to the field, every day was trial and error. All I could do was observe and move forward one step at a time.
そんなチャレンジも寒さや積雪という自然界の厳しい世界は私とヤマセミとの距離感を縮めてくれたのかと思います。撮影ができる距離まで近づけるようになったのは、３ヶ月後の3月になってからでした。このタイミングに遊びにきたゲストさん数名はとてもラッキーだったと思います。というよりも、私のテーマに無理やり付き合わせてしまったかも知れません。エゾモモンガの朝の観察、撮影が終わったら、日の出を見てから、ヤマセミの撮影という朝食前のコースが気持ち良い朝の始まりでした。
I think that the harsh world of nature, with its cold and snow, helped to bring me closer to the kingfisher. It wasn't until three months later, in March, that I was able to get close enough to take pictures. I think the few guests who came to visit at this time were very lucky. Or rather, I may have forced them to join in on my theme. After observing and photographing the Siberian flying squirrels in the morning, I watched the sunrise and then photographed the kingfisher before breakfast, which was a pleasant start to the morning.
最初に撮影に成功したのは、2月でした。地平線から太陽が顔を出すと、霧氷で真っ白に覆われた川沿いのヤナギがキラキラと輝き始めました。いつもの枝に止まったヤマセミ。その距離３００mほどで、まだまだ小さい点にしか見えない大きさ。The first time I was successful in photographing it was in February. As the sun appeared over the horizon, the willow trees along the river, covered in white frost, began to sparkle. A kingfisher was perched on its usual branch. It was about 300m away, and was so small that it looked like nothing more than a tiny dot.
車から降りて、三脚にカメラを乗せて、車のドアを静かに閉める。心の中で、「私は枝です」と唱えながら、３m進んで、5分撮影、また３m進んで、5分撮影、抜き足差し足、足元の氷にあたる三脚の音さえ気にして、とにかく時間をかけて近づいていると、太陽の下でキラキラとダイヤモンド出すとが輝いていました。ヤマセミに近づきたいし、ダイヤモンドダストも撮りたい。そんな時間でした。I got out of the car, put the camera on the tripod, and quietly closed the car door. While chanting in my mind, "I am a branch," I advanced 3 meters, took 5 minutes of shooting, advanced 3 meters again, took 5 minutes of shooting, and took my time to approach, even being careful of the sound of the tripod hitting the ice under my feet. In the sun, the diamonds sparkled. I wanted to get closer to the kingfisher, and I also wanted to take pictures of diamond dust. That was the time I spent.
私の動きはヤマセミは気づいて、キョロキョロするのですが、まさに「リアル だるまさんがころんだ」でした。というよりも、あまりにも毎日毎日、私がしつこいので、ヤマセミも呆れてくれたのでしょうか。最終的には、３００mの距離から、３０mの距離まで近づくことができ、ヤナギの枝の隙間から、ヤマセミのキランと輝く瞳を覗き込むことができました。そして、本気のストーキング。３００mの距離を縮めるために４０分かかりました。The kingfisher noticed my movements and looked around restlessly, just like a real-life Daruma-san ga Koronda (Daruma-san ga Koronda). Or rather, perhaps the kingfisher got fed up with me being so persistent every day. In the end, I was able to close the distance from 300m to 30m, and peered into the kingfisher's sparkling eyes through the gaps in the willow branches. Then I began stalking in earnest. It took 40 minutes to close the 300m distance.
ヤマセミの警戒心が勝つか、食欲が勝つか、私の辛抱としつこさも、なかなかですが、自然というのは、観察していると必ずヒントが隠されています。そのヒントの行動パターンの予測から、次どうするか、どこで待つか、そんなことを考えるのが一番好きで、夏のガイドも冬のガイドも毎日、朝から晩までこんなことばっかりやっています。だからこそ、待てるんで、待たないと、絶対に自然は離れていってしまいます。そして、それをガイドのお客さんと一緒に楽しむ。いい写真が撮れるといいなぁと思いながら、、、。Whether the kingfisher's wariness or its appetite wins out, or my patience and persistence are quite impressive, nature always gives us hidden hints when we observe it. What I like most is to predict the behavioral patterns of these hints and think about what to do next and where to wait, and this is what I do every day, from morning to night, both as a summer and winter guide. That's why I can wait, and if I didn't wait, nature would definitely leave me. And when I'm guiding, I enjoy this with my clients. It's fun.
とにかく美しい鳥です。白と黒という、ヤマセミに迷いはないのでしょう。そしてとんがった頭の毛も、飛びにくそうですが、水中に飛び込む時は収納されてまっすぐになります。翼を広げた時の芸術的なデザインは北海道の冬、モノトーンの世界をさらに引き立てます。キャッキャッキャと声だけはけたたましく大きな鳴き声で、出会えたときの感動はたまらなく嬉しいものです。In short, it is a beautiful bird. There is no doubt about the white and black of the kingfisher. And although the pointed hair on its head makes it difficult to fly, it tucks in and straightens out when diving into the water. The artistic design of its wings when spread out adds color to the monochrome world of Hokkaido's winter. Its only cry is a loud, deafening chirp, and the excitement of meeting one is unbearable.
